Akka is an old Finnish word for grandmother. My stepgrandmother was the Baroness Catherine de Saumerez d’Autriv or Mama Cat, who was an active SCA participant from the late 70’s till she passed in 2004.
My maternal Finnish grandmother was also the shaper of my hear and soul. I am their daughter. 

Akka is also a feminine protector of nature and the personification of the earth. The Finnish culture is based on a deep rooted respect for the land a nature. Even though I am a 4th generation of Finnish immigrants I feel that pull deep in my soul. I often picture the Akka as the mother singing to her children across the seas. I think she calls on the especially to those who do not know her.
